Abstract: 

Understanding the triplet excited states of aromatic molecules is essential for the advancement of optoelectronic devices and chemical reactivities. Despite their extensive use in organic photovoltaics, n-type semiconductors, photocatalysis, and light-emitting diodes, the knowledge of triplet excited states in aromatic imides remains limited. Addressing this gap, our research in the past several years focuses on a class of N-substituted naphthalimides (NNIs). Employing ultrafast and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra, we show how charge transfer significantly modulates the electron spin in both excited and ground states of NNI molecules. Our findings also reveal how the structural complexity of the donor influences NNI spin states, thus impacting their chemical reactivity. A pivotal discovery in our studies is the chirality-dependent triplet-triplet energy transfer among NNIs, leading to the development of a novel method for rapid photoluminescence chiral sensing of natural amino acids. This knowledge not only enhances our understanding of the electronic properties of NNIs but also opens new avenues for their application in high-performance optoelectronic devices and sensitive chemical sensing technologies.




Biography

Prof. Guoqing Zhang received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2005 and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 2010, under the supervision of Prof. Cassandra Fraser and Prof. James N. Demas, with a primary research focus on molecular optical bioimaging and sensing. From 2010 to 2011, he conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University, mentored by Prof. Xiaoliang Sunney Xie, focusing mainly on the application of high-throughput gene sequencing in the study of bacterial resistance mechanisms. Since 2011, Prof. Zhang has been serving as a Professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, appointed in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering (2011-2015) and the Hefei National Research Center for Physical Sciences at Microscale (2015-now). His main research areas include design and spectroscopic characterization of purely organic room-temperature phosphorescent molecules, organic photocatalysis and degradable cationic antibacterial agents. He has led projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including the Excellent Young Scientists Fund and the General Program. As a key researcher, he has also been involved in the Ministry of Science and Technology's projects on "New Methods and Tools for Precise Imaging of Primate Neural Circuits" and the National Key R&D Program's "Quantum Manipulation and Quantum Information," particularly focusing on "Quantum Manipulation of Localized Small Quantum Systems under Local Fields." He has published 60 papers as the corresponding or first author in high-impact academic journals such as Nat. Mater.(1), Nat. Commun.(4), Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.(9), J. Am. Chem. Soc.(2), Adv. Mater.(2), and has been cited over 8,000 times with 8 ESI highly cited papers, an H-index of 46, and holds 26 patents. He was included in the list of the top 2% of global scientists for the year 2022.
