Org. Setting and Reporting

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote inclusive economic, social and environmental development and support regional cooperation and integration in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat, is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

 

This internship position is situated in the Division of Administration, under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.

 

Selected interns will be expected to serve for a minimum period of four months, with an opportunity of extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the Division and the availability of the selected candidate.

 

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.


Responsibilities

This internship opportunity offers:

 

Insights into the administrative functioning of the UN system and ESCAP in particular;

Exposure to a multicultural work environment, and interaction with colleagues across various offices at ESCAP and/or other UN agencies in Bangkok.

 

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and specific duties may include but are not limited to:

 

-Contribute to the provision of effective administrative services;

-Communicate and follow up with relevant stakeholders/parties to ensure issues are resolved;

-Perform administrative support to the team, including preparing and/or processing official documents and Newsletters;

-Attend and summarize meetings;

-Provide administrative support to ongoing projects;

-Generate a variety of standard statistical and other reports, work orders, etc, using various databases in excel and SAP. Data entry and extraction functions.;

-Assist in the day to day management of the Internship Programme for ESCAP;

-Additional tasks on an as-needed basis.

 

For this internship position, experience with MS Office (specifically Excel and Access) a requirement

-monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems;

-keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects;

-meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.


Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

a)be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or


b)be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or


c)have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;


Work Experience

Applicants

-are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme;

-shall be computer literate in standard software applications;

-have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

-have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.


Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
