Gratitude is often expressed after receiving help or service. In addition to “谢谢(xièxiè)”, what else do Chinese people say for that purpose? Let’s take a look together!

xiè xie/duō xiè/xiè le

thanks/ thanks a lot

The most commonly used expression to express gratitude in Chinese; may be used alone, or together with the object or the reason, for example, “谢谢你(xièxiè nǐ, thank you)”, “谢谢你的帮助(xièxiè nǐ de bānɡzhù, thank you for your help)”.

(In the restaurant)

Waiter: This is your dish.

Customer: Thank you.

(Between roommates)

A: I’ve picked up your delivery for you.

B: Thanks a lot.

gǎn xiè/gǎn jī

 be grateful/much appreciated

More formal than “谢谢(xièxiè)”, often used with words accentuating the sense of gratitude, for example, “衷心感谢(zhōnɡxīnɡǎnxiè, heartfelt thanks)”, “感激不尽(ɡǎnjībújìn, cannot be grateful enough)”.

You really helped me a lot, thank you very much.

We are so grateful for your understanding.

(In the mall) Thank you for gracing us with your presence.

dà ēn dà dé/mò chǐ nán wàng

great kindness / unforgettable kindness

ēn zhòng rú shān/wú yǐ wéi bào

a great debt of gratitude / unrepayable kindness

gǎn ēn dài dé/jié cǎo xián huán

immense gratitude / show gratitude even after one’s death

Sincere and solemn expressions for showing gratitude, not intended for daily scenarios; usually used for immense help or favor.

Your immense kindness will always be remembered all my life.

I can’t possibly pay you back for your great kindness this life. I will fulfill it even in the next life.

xīn kǔ le/ shòu lèi le/má fan le

obliged/ sorry for the trouble / sorry for imposing on you

Expressing gratitude by showing concern and regret for the other person.

Sir, sorry for the trouble. Please drink some water.

Sorry for the imposition. I really appreciate it.

It’s so late. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

xìng kuī yǒu nǐ/duō kuī nǐ le

thanks to you/if it hadn’t been for you

yào bù shì nǐ

were it not for you...

Expressing gratitude via “accentuating the importance of the help by assuming the scenario without it”

If it weren’t for your help, I couldn’t find such a good job.

If you hadn’t stood up and spoken for me, I couldn’t have cleared my name.

Were it not for you, I would not have been able to pass the exam however hard I tried.

nǐ zhēn hǎo/tǐ tiē/kāng kǎi

you are so nice/ considerate/ generous...

Some Chinese may think that expressing gratitude directly to close ones seems strange, so they choose compliment or affirmation instead to express thankfulness subtly.

You are so kind, helping me fix the computer so soon.

You are so considerate, coming to pick me up in the cold.
